FOOTBALL - Real Madrid reached the Champions league semi-final on Wednesday, beating APOEL Nicosia 5-2. In the process Real’s trio Cristiano Ronaldo , Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín broke a FC Barcelona scoring record.
GOLF - On Thursday, 5 April, the first golf Major of the 2012 calendar year, the 76th instalment of the US Masters will tee off at Augusta, Georgia. One of our employees, who also works a golf commentator on television has given us a few inside tips on what to look out for.
FORMULA 1 - The 2012 Formula One season is first ever with six world champions - Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen and reigning champion Sebastian Vettel.

MOTORCYCLING - Today is Loris Capirossi’s 39th birthday. The Italian motorcycling legend made a record 328 career Grand Prix starts winning 29 of those and reaching the podium on 99 occasions. He won a World Championship title in his first two seasons in the 125cc and later won the crown in the 250cc (1998). He never won the elusive 500cc/MotoGP title, but his legacy lives on nonetheless.

FOOTBALL - Lionel Messi set a single season scoring record in the Champions League main tournament with his 13th and 14th goals tonight. When also including the former Champions Cup and preliminary rounds to a CL season, the single season record (by José Altafini (1962/1963) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002/2003) was also tied.
TRACK CYCLING - The World Track Cycling Championships have developed a reputation for predicting the Olympic gold medallists prior to the last two Olympic Games. In 2008, seven of the 10 world champions in Olympic events went on to win Olympic gold later that year. Four years earlier, five of the world champions also won gold in Athens in their events. Of the 22 Olympic Track Cycling events in 2004 and 2008, only four were won by someone who had finished outside the top four or not competed at the World Championships earlier that year.
FOOTBALL - Last night it was reported that Mark van Bommel has been offered a contract to play for PSV next season. If he indeed joins the Dutch club, it might be worth putting your money on them now to win next season’s Eredivisie as Van Bommel wins league championships wherever he goes.
FOOTBALL - Manchester City have lost a ton of momentum in the race for the Premier League title and playmaker David Silva’s form has come under scrutiny. Meanwhile, City manager Roberto Mancini has declared his admiration for Tottenham Hotspurs schemer Luka Modric. The numbers suggest that it is not an update, but merely a ‘double’ for Silva.
The Euro Club Index (http://www.euroclubindex.com) gives Manchester United a 90% chance of winning this season’s Premier League title. It is the first time that a Premier League team’s chance has risen above the 90% mark this season after United’s biggest rivals Manchester City slipped up at the weekend by drawing at home to Sunderland.
CHESS - On this day, precisely 37 years ago, Bobby Fischer refused to defend his world chess title he won in 1972, surrendering it by default to Anatoly Karpov. Fischer would never reclaim the world title and Karpov reigned the chess world for 10 years until he was defeated in 1985 by Garry Kasparov.
RUGBY UNION - Today, John Smit is 34 years old. The Springboks front row forward captained South Africa to the 2007 Rugby World Cup, returning the Webb Ellis Cup to the Rainbow Nation for the first time in eight years (South Africa relinquished the Cup in 1999). At the time of publication, Smit is his country’s leading cap taker with 111 international appearances for the Springboks.
