SWIMMING - Franziska van Almsick was a swimming prodigy, accomplishing every possible accolade except that elusive Olympic gold medal. She won 10 pieces of Olympic silverware in any case, to go with her two World Championship titles and a barrage of gold medals in the continental European Championships. ‘Franzi’ is 34 years old today.

BIRTHDAY - 4 April: Loris Capirossi (Motorcycling)

MOTORCYCLING - Today is Loris Capirossi’s 39th birthday. The Italian motorcycling legend made a record 328 career Grand Prix starts winning 29 of those and reaching the podium on 99 occasions. He won a World Championship title in his first two seasons in the 125cc and later won the crown in the 250cc (1998). He never won the elusive 500cc/MotoGP title, but his legacy lives on nonetheless.

TRACK CYCLING - The World Track Cycling Championships have developed a reputation for predicting the Olympic gold medallists prior to the last two Olympic Games. In 2008, seven of the 10 world champions in Olympic events went on to win Olympic gold later that year. Four years earlier, five of the world champions also won gold in Athens in their events. Of the 22 Olympic Track Cycling events in 2004 and 2008, only four were won by someone who had finished outside the top four or not competed at the World Championships earlier that year.

ON THIS DAY - 1975: Fischer forfeits chess crown

CHESS - On this day, precisely 37 years ago, Bobby Fischer refused to defend his world chess title he won in 1972, surrendering it by default to Anatoly Karpov. Fischer would never reclaim the world title and Karpov reigned the chess world for 10 years until he was defeated in 1985 by Garry Kasparov.

RUGBY UNION - Today, John Smit is 34 years old. The Springboks front row forward captained South Africa to the 2007 Rugby World Cup, returning the Webb Ellis Cup to the Rainbow Nation for the first time in eight years (South Africa relinquished the Cup in 1999). At the time of publication, Smit is his country’s leading cap taker with 111 international appearances for the Springboks.
