ON THIS DAY - 1934: Maine Road hosts record crowd

Maine road aerial image.jpgFOOTBALL - On 3 March, 1934, Maine Road, Manchester City’s former ground, was packed with a record 84,659 spectators to watch the Citizens play a FA Cup tie against Stoke City. This remains -to this day- the largest attendance for a match played at an English club ground. Maine Road was nicknamed “The Wembley Of The North” until it was closed in 2003.
