REVIEW: Messi’s insane record hunt continues

FOOTBALL - Lionel Messi set a single season scoring record in the Champions League main tournament with his 13th and 14th goals tonight. When also including the former Champions Cup and preliminary rounds to a CL season, the single season record (by José Altafini (1962/1963) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002/2003) was also tied.

> Only two players scored more goals in a European campaign. Jürgen Klinsmann netted 15 times for Bayern München in the 1995/1996 UEFA Cup and only last season, Radamel Falcao improved the record with 18 goals in the 2010/2011 Europa League.

> Messi became the fourth player in the history of the Champions League to score 50+ in the CL main competition. The leading goalscorers are Raúl (71), Ruud van Nistelrooy (56), Lionel Messi (51) and Thierry Henry (50).
