TENNIS - Rafael Nadal claimed his 47th career men’s singles tournament win and his first in 2012, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters. The Serbian had beaten the Spaniard in their seven previous encounters and in 10 of their last 12. Nadal improved his career record against Djokovic to 17-14.
Nadal has beaten only one opponent more often than Djokovic. He has defeated Roger Federer on 18 occasions.
Nadal won the Monte Carlo Masters for the eighth year in a row. He became the first player in history to claim the same men’s singles crown eight times in succession.
Nadal improved his career record in Monte Carlo to 44-1. The only player that has beaten him there is Guillermo Coria (2003).
Nadal has now won at least one men’s singles title in each of the last nine seasons.
