REVIEW: Messi breaks all-time season scoring record
Lionel Messi scored all four goals for FC Barcelona in their La Liga home win over Espanyol (4-0). Messi is now on 50 La Liga goals and 72 goals in all official matches this season.
- Messi broke the world record of most goals in a single season. Archie Stark (USA) scored 70 goals for Bethlehem Steel (USA) in 1924/25.
- The record for most league goals in a top flight season in Spain, Germany, Italy and England is 60 set by Dixie Dean (Everton) in 1927/28.
- Messi scored his 14th La Liga hat-trick, which broke the club record held by César Rodríguez (1942-1955).
- The Argentine player has now scored four goals in four different matches. Three of these matches are in 2012: vs Valencia in February (4 goals), vs Leverkusen in March (5 goals) and vs Espanyol today.
