PREVIEW: Quarterfinal - England v Italy
FOOTBALL - On Sunday, 24 June, England and Italy will meet in their quarterfinal encounter at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium. It is the 28th match of Euro 2012 and we have assembled some key facts and figures on this match.
> England and Italy have only met twice in ECh or World Cup history and both were matches on Italian soil that were won by Italy: 1-0 at Euro 1980 and 2-1 at the 1990 World Cup (3rd place play-off).
> Since beating West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final, England have never beaten a country that had previously won the World Cup in a knock-out match at either a ECh or a World Cup. England have therefore never beaten a former World Cup winner in a knock out match on foreign soil.
> England are one of only three teams (Germany and Spain being the others) to have five different goal scorers at Euro 2012. The competition record for England is also five (2004).
> During his days as manager of Switzerland (1992-1995), Roy Hodgson met Italy four times. He won once (a 1-0 home win in a World Cup qualifier in May 1993), drew once and lost twice.
> Italy, England and Germany are the only teams to score the opening goal in all three group matches at Euro 2012.
> Antonio Cassano and Danny Welbeck are among the eight players that have been substituted in every group match at Euro 2012.
