ATHLETICS - Vikas Gowda of India has qualified for the men’s Discus Throw event in first place. If he manages to hold on to this place in the finals, he can win the first (gold) medal for India in athletics. India has won a total of nine gold medals, eight of which were won in the men’s hockey tournament. The only non-hockey gold was in 2008, when Abhinav Bindra won the 10m Air Rifle Shooting event.
