> Daniel Agger was sent off for Liverpool. He is the second Liverpool player to be sent off in their opening match and first since Joe Cole v Arsenal in 2010.
> Zoltan Gera scored his first PL goal for West Brom in over four years – since also netting against Merseyside opposition, in their 2-2 draw at Everton in May 2006.

Newcastle United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
> Newcastle won their first opening PL match since 2007. Tottenham remain without a PL victory at Newcastle since 2000.
> Goalkeeper Brad Friedel played at the age of 41 years and 92 days old – the seventh-oldest ever player in the division.
