PREVIEW: Bundesliga Matchday 8
FOOTBALL - The following are some key facts and figures on a selected assortment of matches in the Bundesliga this weekend. The matches we have looked into are Fortuna Düsseldorf - Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund - Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV - VfB Stuttgart.
Fortuna Düsseldorf - Bayern München
> These teams meet each other for the first time in 16 years in the Bundesliga. Bayern took three points in their last six visits to Düsseldorf, between and 1986 and 1996.
> Düsseldorf have lost only one of their first seven matches. This equals their club record which they set on four past occasions. Only in 1972/1973 and 1974/1975, Düsseldorf managed to avoid loss in seven of the first eight matches.
> Bayern have tied the Bundesliga record of seven matches won at the start of a season. Three teams did this earlier - Bayern (1995/1996), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2001/2002) and FSV Mainz 05 (2010/2011). This opening streak didn’t bring these teams a Bundesliga championship. Borussia Dortmund walked away with it on all three occasions.
Borussia Dortmund - Schalke 04
> Of the previous 10 Revierderby goals, only the latest was scored by a player from Germany. Sebastian Kehl scored the winning goal in match round 31 of last season (1-2 at Gelsenkirchen). Of the previous nine goals in the Derby, seven were scored by Dortmund.
> Dortmund are nine points out of the lead, but the run of history still gives them a chance to become champions. In all three previous seasons in which a team had a perfect record after seven matches (like Bayern now), Dortmund ended up as the champions.
> Dortmund have lost only two of their last 35 Bundesliga matches, and it both happened in the month of September: 3-2 at Hamburger SV in September 2012, and 2-1 at Hannover in September 2011.
> Schalke have 14 points after seven matches. This equals their fourth-best start in the Bundesliga, and is the best since 2000/2001 (also 14). Their three better seasons were recorded in the 1970s.
Hamburger SV - VfB Stuttgart
>This match has been a guarantee for goals in the last years. During this century, the 12 matches produced 46 goals, averaging 3.8.
> Hamburg have won two matches in a row. The last time they did this: December 2010 - January 2011 (three matches).
> Stuttgart have won one match after seven, which equals their negative club record set on three occasions. In 1993/1994 and 2010/2011 they also went winless in the eighth Bundesliga match.
