PREVIEW: Bundesliga Matchday 17

FOOTBALL - The following are some key facts and figures on a selected assortment of matches in the Bundesliga this weekend. The matches we have looked into are Bayern München - Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen - Hamburger SV and Schalke 04 - SC Freiburg.

Bayern München - Borussia Mönchengladbach (Friday 14 December, 20:30 CET)

Last season’s win was only Gladbach’s second (2-9-33) at Bayern. Only other win 1-2 on 14 October 1995. This broke a 12-match winless streak.

Herbstmeister Bayern have an 11-point advantage over their nearest rivals Bayer Leverkusen. This margin is the biggest in club history after 16 match rounds in a Bundesliga season, and equals the highest in Bundesliga history (Borussia Dortmund 2010/2011 also 11, all seasons recalculated to 3-point rule).

Gladbach also did not lose the last four Bundesliga away matches (2-2-0). Last loss – 4-0 at Werder Bremen on October 20, 2012. It has been 20 years since they stayed unbeaten in five successive BL away matches (Dec 1991 - Mar 1992, five away matches).

Bayer Leverkusen - Hamburger SV (Saturday 15 December, 15:30 CET)

In each of the last six matches between these teams at Leverkusen, both sides scored at least one goal.

Leverkusen are the only Bundesliga side without a home loss this season – seven matches, five wins, two draws. They have not lost a Bundesliga home match since the managing duo Sascha Lewandowski/Sami Hyypiä took over. Last loss came against SC Freiburg on March 31, 2012.

Hamburg went unbeaten in their last three Bundesliga matches. Last defeat – 2-0 at Fortuna Düsseldorf on November 23, 2012. However, they went winless in their last three Bundesliga away matches. Last away win – 0-2 at FC Augsburg on October 26, 2012.

Schalke 04 - SC Freiburg (Saturday 15 December, 18:30 CET)

The last three matches between these teams (both stadiums), have been won by the home side – two for Schalke, one for Freiburg. In the five matches prior to these three, the home team went winless.

Last week, Ciprian Marica became Schalke’s 13th goal scorer of the season. This is a Bundesliga high.

Freiburg have collected 23 points after 16 matches. This is their third-best Bundesliga campaign ever, behind only 2010/2011 (27) and 1994/1995 (30).
