REVIEW: Zambia win 1st AFCON on 15th attempt

FOOTBALL - Zambia won their maiden African Cup of Nations in dramatic fashion after silencing Ivory Coast in a penalty shootout after 120 scoreless minutes of football. Zambia had held the status of most participations without lifting the trophy and that torch has now been handed down to Senegal, who completed a 12th campaign without winning it all in 2012. The outcome was bitter for runners-up Ivory Coast, who went through the entire tournament without conceding a single goal in regulation or extra time, building a 9-0 goal differential in five victories en route to the final, before succumbing in the penalty shootout.

REVIEW: Zambia, Ivory Coast reach AFCON final

FOOTBALL - The final of the 2012 African Cup of Nations will feature Zambia and Ivory Coast. The latter are aiming for their second overall triumph in the competition following their victorious 1992 endeavour. Zambia have reached the final in 1974 and 1994, but have yet to win. Remarkably, Zambia’s last final appearance came after a terrible tragedy, which saw 18 Zambian players die in an air crash in 1993. Zambia are making their 15th appearance in the competition, the most by any nation that has never lifted the trophy.
