OLYMPIC GAMES - Looking at the performance in athletics and swimming events of the 2012 London Olympic Games, this edition of the Olympics is not as record-friendly as the one in Beijing four years ago. In Beijing 26 world records were broken in athletics and swimming, and an additional 21 Olympic records. In London there are 11 world records so far and an additional 17 Olympic records.
OLYMPIC GAMES - In Thursday’s men’s 200m final, the iconic Usain Bolt can become the first participant in athletics at the London 2012 Olympic Games to win more than one gold medal.
ATHLETICS - The United States have dominated the men’s sprinting events (100m and 200m) since early times. Americans have won more gold and silver medals than all other countries put together. ATHLETICS - Americans Michael Johnson and Tommie Smith were ahead of their time with their winning races in the men’s 200m sprint. Tommie Smith was about 0.4 seconds faster than one would expect in that time. Michael Johnson about 0.5 seconds. Robert Kerr took the longest to win the gold, in 1908 it took him 22.6 seconds, compared to Usain Bolt’s world record, Kerr still had to run over 30 metres when Bolt crossed the line.
