Tommie Smith was about 0.4 seconds faster than one would expect in that time. Michael Johnson about 0.5 seconds. Robert Kerr took the longest to win the gold, in 1908 it took him 22.6 seconds, compared to Usain Bolt’s world record, Kerr still had to run over 30 metres when Bolt crossed the line.
