FOOTBALL - By defeating Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern München became the first team in Bundesliga history to win 15 of their first 17 matches in a season. The 47 points by Bayern are the most by any team in Bundesliga history after 17 of 34 matches.
FOOTBALL - The 19-year-old Sassuolo striker Domenico Berardi became the first player in the 85-year history of Serie A to score four times in a top flight match against AC Milan. Berardi accounted for his team’s entire production in a 4-3 win. It also marked the first time in nearly 12 years (3-2 defeat against Udinese in January 2002) that Milan lost a Serie A match after taking a 2-0 lead.
FOOTBALL - FC Barcelona held off rivals Atletico Madrid (0-0) to preserve their La Liga table lead after the comclusion of Matchday 19. For the second season in a row and for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons, they lead the Spanish league at the halfway point. FC Barcelona have won 23 of 30 official matches this season and of the seven encounters they did not win three were matches against Atletico Madrid.
FOOTBALL - On the night when he returns from a 59-day absence due to injury, Lionel Messi scores his 365th and 366th career goals for club and country, enough to fill a calendar with. For a leap year, that is.
FOOTBALL - Manchester City cruised to a 5-0 victory over West Ham United in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semifinal tie. The Citizens are in a commanding position to reach their first League Cup final since 1976, which was also the last year they won this trophy. They also won it in 1970 and finished runners-up in 1974.
FOOTBALL - Manchester United lost their first FA Cup match under David Moyes, a home match against Swansea City on Sunday (2-1). Sir Alex Ferguson was eliminted only once in 27 years in the 3rd FA Cup round as Man United manager (in 2010 vs Leeds Utd).
FOOTBALL - Cristiano Ronaldo has finished the 2013 calendar year on 69 goals in 59 official matches for club and country. He has now netted 60 times in 2011, 63 times in 2012 and 69 times in 2013. Ronaldo netted once against Valencia CF in Sunday’s La Liga encounter, helping his side to a 3-2 away win.
FOOTBALL - Mario Balotelli finished the 2013 calendar year as the top scorer in Serie A, scoring 18 times in the league since 1 January. His main challenger, Internazionale’s Rodrigo Palacio, scored Inter’s winning goal (1-0) in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina, but the Argentine managed no more than his 17th goal in 2013.
FOOTBALL - Just like last year, FC Barcelona are leading La Liga at year’s end. Barça needed to come back from 2-0 down to pip Atlético Madrid on goal difference. Pedro provided the spark with three goals in eight minutes, the fastest by a Barça player since Dani needed seven minutes against Real Betis on 25 September 1999.
