ATHLETICS - Americans Michael Johnson and Tommie Smith were ahead of their time with their winning races in the men’s 200m sprint. Tommie Smith was about 0.4 seconds faster than one would expect in that time. Michael Johnson about 0.5 seconds. Robert Kerr took the longest to win the gold, in 1908 it took him 22.6 seconds, compared to Usain Bolt’s world record, Kerr still had to run over 30 metres when Bolt crossed the line. OLYMPIC GAMES - Great Britain has won seven gold medals in the track cycling event, no other country managed to win more than one gold medal. Of all sports that have been completed this Olympic Games, no country has won more than these 7 gold medals of Team GBR in track cycling. Kirani James claimed the nation’s only gold medal this Olympic Games, but due to a population of just over 100,000 inhabitants, it means the country on average wins more than nine gold medals per million inhabitants while the leaders in the medal table, China, win 0.02 gold medals for every million Chinese inhabitants. ATHLETICS - Vikas Gowda of India has qualified for the men’s Discus Throw event in first place. If he manages to hold on to this place in the finals, he can win the first (gold) medal for India in athletics. India has won a total of nine gold medals, eight of which were won in the men’s hockey tournament. The only non-hockey gold was in 2008, when Abhinav Bindra won the 10m Air Rifle Shooting event. After 7 days and 28 swimming events, the US swimming team didn’t miss out on a single final. Out of those 28 events, there were just four in which they did not win a medal. TENNIS - Roger Federer’s epic men’s singles semifinal victory over Juan Martín Del Potro means that the Swiss is one victory away from a career Golden Slam, winning all four Majors as well as an Olympic gold medal. Only three players have ever achieved it in singles: Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal. Apart from Federer, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova also set out to achieve that feat.
