CYCLING - Alex Dowsett and Sir Bradley Wiggins finished first and second respectively in Saturday’s individual time trial in the Giro d’Italia. Before July 2012, British riders had never recorded 1-2 finishes in individual time trials in Grand Tours. Now, this feat has been achieved three times in the last 10 months.
CYCLING - On Saturday, the 96th Giro d’Italia starts in Naples. Mark Cavendish has won 36 stages in all three Grand Tours combined and needs one more stage win to equal Rik Van Looy on eighth place on the all-time list. CYCLING - Fabian Cancellara wrapped up his second career Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) win on Sunday, following up on his 2010 triumph. Fiorenzo Magni (1949, 1950 and 1951) and Jan Raas (1979 and 1983) are the only other non-Belgian riders to have accomplished that feat. Cancellara won his 5th ‘Monument’ race (MSR,RvV,PR,LBL,GdL), the highest echelon of Classic races.
CYCLING - Tom Boonen needs to win the Ronde van Vlaanderen one more time to become the first rider to win this classic four times. The Ronde van Vlaanderen is the only classic of the big-5 (Monument races) that has been won a maximum three times.
CYCLING - Milano - Sanremo will take place today. It is the first of the cycling season’s major Spring Classics. CYCLING - Alberto Contador won the Vuelta a España on Sunday, winning his fifth Grand Tours. He also was victorious in the Vuelta in 2008, the Tour de France in 2007 and 2009 and the Giro d’Italia in 2008. The Spaniard became the 10th rider to win at least five Grand Tours.

CYCLING - Bradley Wiggins is the winner of the 99th edition of the Tour de France, a remarkable feat considering that no riders from Great Britain had previously reached the podium in ‘La Grande Boucle’. Peter Sagan won the Points Classification, Thomas Voeckler the Mountain Classification and Tejay Van Garderen the Youth Classification.
