ALPINE SKIING - With four gold medals and one bronze, the United States have been the most successful country in the 2013 World Alpine Skiing Championships in Schladming, Austria. It is the first time in the 82-year history of the competition that the table is topped by a non-European nation and the first time since 1997 (Norway) that a non-alpine country leads the list.
ALPINE SKIING - Ted Ligety could be the first male skier in 45 years to win at least three gold medals at an Alpine Skiing World Championships. 1968, the year when Céline Dion was born, Bob Beamon soared and Marthin Luther King was assassinated, is the last year when at least three gold medals were won by an individual at an Alpine Skiing World Championships (Jean-Claude Killy’s four golds).

HANDBALL - The French men’s national handball team is in search of a third straight world championship title, a feat that would be unprecedented. On four occasions, the reigning champions defended their crown but no team has won three in a row. France are also tied for most world titles (four) with Romania and Sweden.
