REVIEW: Cristiano Ronaldo equals La Liga scoring record

FOOTBALL – Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick emphatically beat city rivals Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, allowing the Portuguese to equal his own single season La Liga goalscoring record (40 goals), a mark he set last season. However, Real Madrid’s ace leader managed to put up more significant numbers.

> CR7 became the first player to score at least 40 goals in successive seasons in the top 5 leagues of European domestic football (ENG, ESP, GER, ITA, FRA).

> He moved beyond 50 official goals tonight, starting on 49 and raising his tally to 52 official goals for the season. That is one short of his personal record of 53 set last season.

> He recorded his seventh hat-trick in official matches for Real Madrid this season, the most by any player in a single season campaign by a player representing a Spanish club.
