FOOTBALL – Germany are the favourites for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, but only just, according to a new analysis from Infostrada Sports. The United States are second favourites and there is nearly 50% chance of the winners being one or the other of these two teams. They are, however, most likely to meet each other at the semi-final stage of the competition.
TENNIS – Defending champions Switzerland were eliminated in the opening round of this year’s Davis Cup competition as they lost 3-2 to Belgium. They are the first defending champions since Spain in 2005 to be knocked out in the opening round. Continue reading
FOOTBALL: Euro 2016 qualification begins this weekend and two of the top seeded teams in the draw, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy, are not the favourites to win their groups according to the Infostrada Sports’ National Team Ranking. Six of the nine groups have an overwhelming favourite to be group winner and only one of the groups looks truly competitive at this stage. We finish our analysis of the groups by looking at E to I. Football – During the group phase of the 2014 World Cup, 122 goals were scored (excluding penalties and own goals) in 48 matches, a scoring rate of 2.54 goals per match. The 16 matches played in the second round produced just nine goals in normal time after excluding Huntelaar’s penalty and Yobo’s own goal, a rate of 1.13 goals per match. This is an enormous drop from the group stage so what is going on?
FOOTBALL – Argentina generally on top from around the half hour mark onwards but Switzerland’s desperate attempts to equalise at the end of extra time clear to see.
FOOTBALL – Now that the business end of the World Cup has been reached, the Infostrada Sports Forecast has been updated. Brazil remain the favourites and therefore the most likely winners with an all-South American final between Brazil and Argentina the most probable final at this stage.
FOOTBALL – After two match rounds, Brazil remain as World Cup favourites in the Infostrada Sports’ Forecast with 24.5% chance of lifting the trophy on July 13. This has barely changed since the start of the competition but continental rivals Argentina’s chances are improving and now stand at nearly 18%.
