RECORD: Xavi, Messi set records as Barça advance

FOOTBALL – FC Barcelona join Arsenal (10 and running) and Real Madrid (16-running) as the only clubs to reach the CL KO stages in 10+ seasons in a row. From the 15 times that FC Barcelona advanced from the (first) group phase, they have done so with at least one matchday to spare on 12 occasions. They secured progress six times on Matchday 4, six times on Matchday 5 and three times on Matchday 6.

Xavi set an all-time CL record with his 80th victory in the competition, surpassing Raúl on 79.

Lionel Messi netted his seventh CL goal against Milan equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most against specific opponents (seven against Ajax). Later, Messi would improve this record to eight.

Messi also extended the record for most CL matches with multiple goals, to 18.

IN THE NEWS – Who is La Liga’s premier provider?

FOOTBALL – We understand how much attention Xavi and Andrés Iniesta are receiving for being among the world’s best passers and providers. But the overlord of La Liga assists is someone that we have not seen for a while. Want to know who that is?

Did you know Ángel Di María has more assists than Xavi and Iniesta combined despite playing 29 games less than both of them together in La Liga? Di Maria has provided 13 assists in 15 league matches; 3 as a sub. Iniesta has provided 6 assists in 20 league matches, 4 as a sub. Xavi has also provided 6 assists in 24 league matches, 2 as a sub.
